Beyond your warm market, keeping your business rolling

If you are new to marketing there are two types of prospects what is termed warm and cold. Warm contacts are people we know personally typically friends, family, coworkers, neighbors, etc. Cold contacts are people we never spoke to before the initial contact.

Most of us contact our warm market first to find interested people in our products or the business. After all we are very excited about the prospect of starting our own business and the impending success of course we want to share that excitement with the people close to us.

So once we have burned through our warm market we can not stop there. We still need to find new contacts. The next step is tapping into the cold market. In today’s high tech environment there are a lot of options for getting cold contacts and here are a few examples:

  • Person to person situational prospecting. This is where you start a conversation with people you run into during the normal course of your day.
  • Lead Programs. Using online and offline lead generation companies who target people looking for your product or a business opportunity.
  • Referrals. Obtaining new contacts by asking existing contact who they might know that would be interested in your product or business.
  • Viral Leads. These leads are person to person leads generated by people outside your network. Email chain letters are a type of viral lead.

It makes sense to incorporate some or all of these different lead sources as well as about 40 other forms we teach when building the business. Success in the business is possible by keeping a constant stream of fresh people looking at the business. You should have people looking at the business, some deciding on the business, and others getting started in the business. If you keep a constant stream of people at various stages of getting started you will never run out of qualified people joining your business.
